Hey,
First of all, I think your blog is very informative and helpful to anyone interested in outdoor TV and appreciate a true expert’s insight into the industry. Onto my question, I am trying to find some outdoor television industry/marketing research and was wondering if you could point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance,
Doug Moore

Hi Doug – we use Simmons, MRI, and the US Fish & Wildlife Survey. There are a few indep places you can use as well – like Southwick & Assoc. Only the US Fish & Wildlife Survey is free, the rest you have to pay per survey, or some sort of subscription. You can email me at sportsman@thesportsmanchannel.com if you need other info.
Thanks for stopping by!

Hi,
I enjoyed your article on evaluating outdoor show ideas. What do you think of a fly fishing show that focuses primariliy on warm water (bass, panfish, etc.) and takes a middle market, mid-america approach as opposed to showcasing exotic destinations. A program for the everyman, who probably fishes today, but may be new to fly fishing.
Thanks,
leigh

Hi Leigh – thanks for reading. It sounds like a great idea! most fly fishing shows do focus on the upper class destinations, but there are great fly fishing locales right in America’s backbone that many people don’t normally think of as “hot spots.” Like the driftless areas of MN and WI. You just need a great host that will appeal to your audience segment and along with your storyline, you have a show! Good luck!

HI, think your blog was great. I was wondering if there were any college degrees related to outdoor videography or television show production.

Thanks Chance! There are not any college degrees specifically to outdoor Video that I know of…but the School of Journalism at U of Missouri is a good start. They have the best outdoor program out there right now. If nothing else, any video class or degree will do. Outdoor shows are just looking for the skills needed to take their show to the next level.

your advice is priceless! I’m totally with you on needing to find a nitch. and i think everyone will agree they’ve seen enough whitetail shows but i have some unique ideas. i’ve really gained a passion for guiding over the past 5 or 6 years around the charleston SC. area. I’ve guided hog hunts, shark fishing charters, and alligator hunting. i also own and operate a taxidermy business. I’m now back in the ohio river valley (long story) but i would love to taylor my guiding to this part of the country and try to evolve it into an outdoor show. any words of wisdom?
